Canada is having a moment. From seeing more than a handful of Canadian artists topping the charts to having our Prime Minister cover Rolling Stone, all eyes seem to be on our great nation. And now it looks like YouTube is giving us another reason to be proud. Launching today, the video-friendly social media giant has a new channel called Spotlight Canada, which is dedicated specifically to showcase homegrown talent.
Basically, it’s your one-stop shop to explore all things Can Con. Whether you’re looking for new talent or videos, checking out Canada’s fave creators or simply finding trending videos created by homegrown talent, this new space houses it all. You can even check out all the highlights from the Canada 150 celebrations and discover a roster of indigenous music artists like Juno award-winning group A Tribe Called Red. While we Canadians are proud to see some of our YouTube stars like Lilly Singh, LaurDIY, Mike Tompkins and our August cover girl Gigi Gorgeous break out of YouTube and be the industry’s buzziest social media stars, the objective is to not only “showcase Canada’s top stars, but also to help discover emerging Canadian talent,” explains Marie Josée Lamothe, Managing Director, Quebec, Google Canada
“Canada is the first country to have its own Spotlight channel dedicated solely to local creators,” says Lamothe in a press statement. “Canadians make up one of the world’s most vibrant communities on YouTube – watchtime in Canada has grown 30% over last year, and our Canadian YouTubers are exploding internationally. We are so proud of their success and want to do more to share it here at home.”
YouTube will also be launching its hot new feature Creator on the Rise in Canada on August 2. In case that doesn’t mean anything to you, this is a cool section found in the Trending tab that features to four new creators and artists for 24 hours each day, so users like us can discover up-and-coming talent from Canada with ease.
