Downton Abbey cast members have been magically popping up on big screens everywhere for the past few years. Lady Rose (Lily James) and Daisy Mason (Sophie McShera) fought over a glass slipper in Cinderella, Mrs. Crawley (Penelope Wilton) pretended to be Queen E in The BFG, and Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) was resurrected as a prince-turned-monster in Beauty and the Beast. But as fun as it is to see our favourite Downton Abbey characters retiring to fairytale narratives, it’s even more fun to imagine them back where they belong: upstairs (or downstairs) at their Yorkshire country estate.
When the final episode of the hit BBC period drama wrapped up in 2015, fans have been spreading rumours of a follow-up film. The buzz was picked up back in September, when actor Michael C. Fox confirmed that Maggie Smith (a.k.a. Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham) was on board. Now, another actor is teasing details and sending the show’s cult-followers into a frenzy.
“It’s supposed to be happening–filming–this year, but it hasn’t been locked down yet,” says Jeremy Swift, who plays Septimus Spratt, to ITV‘s Lorraine Kelly. “It’s just getting everybody in that same space and time… I think there’s a huge appetite for it.”
Wait, what? This year? As in 2017?!
“There is a film script that we’ve all been sent but it disappeared in a Mission Impossible-style from our emails… With a little puff.”
Okay, this sounds suspicious. We’re into Swift’s optimism, but it sounds like he might be giving us false hope.
Although, the show’s production company Carnival Films has confirmed that a script for a *potential* movie is in development, it isn’t giving away much more than that. A representative told the BBC: “There are still no firm plans about when a film might go into production. When the future plans are certain we will of course make an announcement at the relevant time.”
Either way, this is something to get excited about. While we wait on more concrete confirmation, there’s six whole seasons of Downton Abbey to binge watch over and over and over…
