Shailene Woodley Signs Plea Deal for Protesting Dakota Pipeline

Shailene Woodley has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for taking part in a protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline and will face one year of unsupervised probation.

The 25-year-old actress made headlines last October after she was arrested at the pipeline construction site. Of the 200 or so demonstrators who participated in voicing their opposition to the pipeline, 27 were arrested and charged with trespassing and rioting. Woodley complied with orders to leave the area, yet was still taken into custody.

Amazingly, she was able to capture the chaos on Facebook Live. At the end of the two-hour video—which has now been viewed almost 5 million times—Woodley is seen returning to her RV from the protest when she is stopped by police in riot gear.

“They grabbed me by my jacket and they said that I wasn’t allowed to continue and they have giant guns and batons and zip ties and they’re not letting me go,” she said to a live audience online.

But the Divergent star hasn’t been scared speechless. Days after her arrest, Woodley penned an essay for TIME Magazine about how her involvement had raised heightened awareness of Standing Rock.

“It took me,” she wrote, “a white non-native woman being arrested on Oct 10th in North Dakota, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, to bring this cause to many people’s attention. And to the forefront of news publications around the world.”

The news of Woodley’s plea deal arrived the same day that the Keystone Pipeline, another controversial project protested by environmentalists, was passed by Donald Trump’s administration.
