Fact: Harry Styles is known to be notoriously private when it comes to his personal life. So you can imagine our surprise when the One Direction member was more or less open to talk about his relationships in the May issue of Rolling Stone, specifically about his fling with former flame, Taylor Swift.
Harry Styles appears on our new cover. Head to RollingStone.com to read the story in full. In the feature, the One Direction member opens up to Cameron Crowe about his new sound, his social media presence, Taylor Swift and more. “Every decision I’ve made since 16 was made in a democracy,” he says. “I felt it was about time to make a decision—and I shouldn’t rely on others.” Photograph by Theo Wenner (@theo123456)
If you’re a Swifty or a Directioner (or a Haylor shipper!), you would remember that time when social media lit up with photos of the two A-list singers taking a stroll in New York City’s Central Park back in 2012. Unfortunately, as much as we loved the coupling, the relationship fizzled out after the pair’s very public New Year’s kiss in January 2013.
“When I see photos from that day, I think: Relationships are hard, at any age,” Styles tells Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe of the Central Park pics. “And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier.
“I mean, you’re a little bit awkward to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date.”
As willing as he may seem to talk about his past relationship, however, Harry wasn’t comfortable sharing too much with the mag. At one point, he even tried to avoid the whole situation by heading to the
“I gotta pee first. This might be a long one,” he says at one point. “Actually, you can say, ‘He went for a pee and never came back.'” (But don’t worry…the “Sign of the Times” singer did come back to share some more juicy details about Swift.)
Albeit a short-lived one, the relationship clearly was a memorable one for both parties, given that the two allegedly used their past dating experiences to launch chart-topping singles (think “Out of the Woods” and “Style” for Swift and “Perfect” and his latest “Ever Since New York” for Styles).
“I mean, I don’t know if they’re about me or not …” explains the former boy band member.”But the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere. I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs. That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about. That’s the part that’s about the two people. I’m never going to tell anybody everything.”
It seems like the two ended on civilized terms. But then again, how could we forget that infamous GIF of Swift saying “Shut the f*** up” (or “Sorry for my arm”) at the 2014 MTV VMAs when 1D was on stage presenting?
However, given that the break-up was still fresh at that point, we can cut her some slack…we mean, what girl wouldn’t still be bitter?
When asked if there was anything he wanted to say to Swift today, Styles humorously replies, “Maybe this is where you write down that I left!”
But being a good sport that he is, he laughs it off and puts together an answer: “I don’t know. Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You’re celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than ‘this didn’t work out, and that’s bad.’ And if you run into that person, maybe it’s awkward, maybe you have to get drunk … but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best shit ever. So thank you.”
So if you were wondering if there’s still any “Bad Blood” between Styles and Swift, there isn’t. Now, let’s move on.
