Grammy Awards 2017: The Best Dressed from the Red Carpet

Come awards season the big difference between actors and musicians is the former can favour fashion that is chic and stylish but let’s face it, easy and aspirational. Musicians on the other hand are all about letting the freak flag fly.

But at the 59th Annual Grammy awards, held at L.A.s Staples Centre, many artists listened to their stylists and embraced spring’s bright hues and the typical low cut gowns. Where were the whacky ensembles? In fact, the 2017 Grammys felt a little like an actors awards show. Even Katy Perry is blonde now (which really suits her) and was dressed by Tom Ford.

But back to the colour. Show-opener Adele arrived in an olive green, diagonal checkerboard Givenchy Couture. It was a lovely change from her classic black. Celine Dion went emerald green in Zuhair Murad. And with Valentines Day around the corner there was plenty of red: Carrie  Underwood in a shimmery Elie Madi said, “I usually don’t do red, but I was feeling it.” Country superstar Faith Hill in head to toe scarlet, fumbled designer Zuhair Murad’s name, while Charli XCX talked up her punk-admiration for Vivienne Westwood in red. Halsey, of The Chainsmokers “Closer,” wore an open-front royal blue tracksuit. She told E! she didn’t want to wear a dress, but chose something that divined soul greats, TLC. This seemed pretty rock n roll to me. Rihanna sported a bright orange bra-top with a full black skirt from Armani Prive. You never see separates, and it worked.

Model favourite Balmain was well represented on the red carpet with Nick Jonas in head-to-toe Olivier Roustieng, and Paris Jackson, daughter of the late Michael, (she is everywhere all of the sudden, maybe it’s the Rolling Stone cover effect) wore a striped Balmain dress with double reveal leg slits.

Arriving from her Vegas residency Jennifer Lopez (a Grammy Hall of Famer for that Versace dress) looked elegant in  a lavender Ralph & Russo gown. She was shy when asked about Drake, but responded ever so diplomatically: “I love Drake, he’s so talented.” Her dress had a plunging neckline, high slit and gauzy neck bow. A lot going on, but so classy. Though she too looked more like an actress than a singer. Worth noting is that this 40-something pulled off a shade made famous by kids 25 years her junior. Can’t be a coincidence.

Thank goodness for Lady Gaga. After wearing a functional, though gorgeous, romper for her Superbowl halftime show, she seemed the only artist to throw caution to the wind. Her barely there, underboob-leather jacket had a wide open back, that she paired with shorts. It screamed Night Porter-meets-Cher. The Gaga will not be tamed.
