The horrifying world of sex-trade still exists. That’s why a willful team, including celebrity powers like Ashton Kutcher, is absolutely necessary to help fight it.
Luckily, Kutcher is already advocating against the modern-day slavery. At a senate hearing Wednesday, he was emotional as he presented the issue to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington, DC. He thinks it’s time for society and the government to defend the vulnerable.
While working at his “day job” at Torn, an organization that focuses on building computer software to fight human trafficking, Kutcher spoke tearfully about the horrible things he had witnessed at FBI raids.
The 39-year-old father of two with actress Mila Kunis said, “I’ve seen video content of a child that’s the same age as mine being raped by an American man that was a sex tourist in Cambodia.”
“And this child was so conditioned by her environment that she thought she was engaging in play,” he added, choking up.
And maybe – as disturbing as it is to think about, others having children around the same age might put how horrible the issue is into perspective.
According to the Human Trafficking National Hotline, there were 7,572 human trafficking cases in the U.S. reported in 2016. Since 2007, that brings them to over 31,000, not taking into account the over 145,000 signals they received in entirety.
The top state for the modern slavery? California, with over double the number of cases than every other state.
With the illegal child sex trade booming now more than ever, it’s hard not to feel for the victims.
“The right to pursue happiness for so many is stripped away, it’s raped, it’s abused, it’s taken by force, fraud or coercion – it is sold for the momentary happiness of another.”
He said that his team previously received a call from the Department of Homeland Security with a request for help. A seven-year-old girl who had been filmed being sexually abused for three years was still not found and the actor’s organization was their last line of defense.
Kutcher’s idea to put an end to this? Technology.
“Technology can be used to enable slavery, but it can also be used to disable slavery,” he said. His web-based non-profit is a developed tool that might just have an impact on defeating sex-trade.
Who knows? At this point, they’re willing to try everything.
