The last time I had a chance to sit down with Hailee Steinfeld for an in-depth interview was in 2013. For her, it seems like “ages ago,” but it’s really only been three years since she graced FASHION magazine’s cover. Back then, our chat was booked at Fred Segal department store in Santa Monica, a place where she thumbed through racks of clothes to prep for her sweet 16 birthday bash (which ended up being covered by People magazine). It was a time when Hailee was still feeling the rush of her Oscar-nominated appearance in a period drama called True Grit. In the film, she played a gun-wielding farm girl named Mattie who seeks revenge for her father’s death. It was a performance that opened so many doors. At 15, she was handpicked by Miuccia Prada to be the face of Miu Miu. At 16, Hailee can be counted as one of the few teens to do a Shakespeare film, which she took on with Julian Fellows as director in his adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (she played Juliet). By the time Hailee turned 17, she was signed to a major record company and began writing and recording songs for her first major EP, Haiz. Now, at 19, Steinfeld has starred in more than a dozen films, has two Billboard- and iTunes-charting hits (“Love Myself” and “Starved”) and is consistently counted as best dressed in red carpet roundups. As she is gearing up for another big year ahead—Oscar buzz is starting for her performance in her soon-to-be-released movie Edge of Seventeen—and she’ll be dropping her first full-length album early 2017.
FASHION is celebrating Steinfeld’s success and her second cover with us via a live cover photo shoot and interview. What you see is what you get with Steinfeld: She’s chill, focused and really feeds off the energy of others (our photographer, Yu Tsai, took selfie breaks to do rock star poses with an unplugged microphone). Fashion editor George Antonopoulos—who styled the shoot—was impressed with the knowledge Hailee had of all the brands and the vibrant looks he pulled (this includes pieces from Versace and Valentino). “Hailee got such a charge out of clothes that were inspired by ’80s fashion,” he says. “She treated every shot like she was filming a movie and getting into a new character.” To cap off the day, Hailee and I wrapped with a Facebook Live interview—a first for FASHION—that touches on her life in film and music. Here’s a sneak peek of our upcoming Winter Cover with Hailee:
