After multiple seasons of air-dried hair, stylist Orlando Pita broke from the script, dusting off his round brush and blow-dryer backstage at Diane von Furstenberg’s and Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2016 shows to give models a polished look. Could this be a sign that blowouts are back? If you ask Vanessa Yakobson, CEO of Blo Blow Dry Bar, they never went away, they’ve just changed. “In the early days, that super-straight flat-ironed look was one of our most popular styles,” says Yakobson. Today, beachy waves are most requested by her clients.
But for those who like to take matters into their own hands, Dyson, maker of the coveted vacuums, has entered the beauty game with its Supersonic Hair Dryer. Like a hybrid car, it’s far quieter than its clunky predecessor and dries strands faster using its patented Air Multiplier technology (also found in Dyson’s bladeless fans). In addition to recruiting female engineers to work on the project, the company sent its male engineers to blowout bootcamp and had its founder, Sir James Dyson, wear a wig to get a feel for what it’s like to style your own hair. “He couldn’t quite get what we were talking about,” says engineer Annmarie Nicholson. Their feedback was likely behind the idea to house the motor in the handle, which makes it lighter and easier to hold, so even biceps atrophied after months of air-drying won’t cave. Though it’s been available since last month at dysoncanada.ca, it’s now available in store exclusively at The Bay as of today.
