Call it the Hillary effect—Hollywood’s leading ladies of the big and small screen are puttin’ on the Ritz this awards season. At last weekend’s 74th Annual Golden Globes, nominees Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) both wore cool menswear-inspired tux looks on the red carpet—a refreshing alternative to the usual frilly fare. Wood told E! News reporter Ryan Seacrest that her custom Altuzarra suit was an homage to Marlene Dietrich in Victor Victoria and David Bowie (the late singer’s birthday was January 8). “I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure young girls and women know that it’s not a requirement,” she told Seacrest during their red carpet interview.

Power dressing after dark may be having a moment, but this equal opportunity sartorial statement has been making the rounds since 1966, when Yves Saint Laurent designed the first haute couture tux suit, Le Smoking. (Think luxe black velvet, a matching vest and a white shirt with ruffled cuffs.) Perfection then—and now.

Hollywood’s female celebs have had a long love affair with Le Smoking. From Diane Keaton to Zendaya, this alt eveningwear look has smouldered on many red carpets over the years. We’ve rounded up 11 of Hollywood’s top menswear mavericks—these ladies know the power of a sleek, tailored tux. Old boys’ club be damned. Check out our red carpet gallery below.
